I have been running the MSD system for several years with good results.
I first got a 6A and ran a converted stock distributor. Later, I
upgraded to the Digital 6 (6AL I believe) it has adjustable retards and
rev limiters and a MSD Distributor. Although I am running a distributor
system at present, I certainly believe in the crank trigger setup. I
ran a Hayes Stinger system for many years which had a switch able
distributor or crank trigger. It really worked well. With that setup you
could use the distributor to start the engine and run at lower RPMs,
where the distributor advance curve was needed, then switch to the crank
trigger down course.
With the crank trigger, all the distributor does is deliver the spark
from the coil to the spark plugs. MSD says you have to use an MSD
ignition Control with the trigger. The big advantage of the crank
trigger ignition is stability and consistency, it fires at the right
time every time. With a distributor, there are more variables to be
concerned with, timing chain stretch, cam torque with rear mounted
distributors, etc.
The reluctor is the part in an electronic distributor that replaces the
distributor cam in a point system. The crank trigger wheel that bolts to
the crank dampener would be a reluctor. The spark is triggered by a
change in magnetic field in the pickup coil that is relayed to the
ignition module. This change can be, as in many stock electronic
systems, brought about by bringing a metal tooth in close proximity of
the pickup coil's core, which has a magnet attached, or in MSD's case
passing magnets by the pickup coil to generate the signal. I hope I have
