Lew was not only a good friend of the racers, he was a rare thinking person
in the BLM system. Instead of sending the performance bond money to the
Denver office where they took a 20% bite for storage, he just filed it in
the safe at the SLC Field Office. The racers got back 100% of their deposit
if they had performed as required. Many other little things like this made
a difference in the way you could deal with the BLM. Lew had a tumor the
size of an egg removed from his brain over a year ago. He laughed about it
... said the biggest problem was that the mental arithmetic he used to take
for granted just wasn't there any more. Said he couldn't add two numbers
and be sure he would get the same answer twice. He was wise and
understanding in the way he dealt with people. Everyone's loss with his
passing.
His immediate replacement, Sarah Sutherland got married on April 14 and
transferred to the Las Vegas Field Office. Her husband has been working
down there. She broke both arms in an accident last fall while riding in
the desert and spent all last winter recovering. Ended up with casts on
both then one then the other arm in the recovery/reconstruction process.
Had them both unencumbered for the wedding from the reports I got of the
event.
