After going thru the rule book again I have found a place in the rules
that says a fuel line can be run in the cockpit as long as it is steel or
steel braided. A remote still looks like the best deal.

The part you refer to in the rulebook about braided fuel line is generally
refers to a line to a fuel pressure gauge. The Dial-a-Jet systems have been
mounted outside the firewall with the control rod extending into the cockpit.
I think the less fuel you keep outside the better off you are.
