I opened up my Chubby Small Block last night and
found something I'm not used to. Every head
gasket I've ever seen on a modern V-8 has been a
composite type thing with crush rings around the
cylinders. What I found under these heads were
two thin (.030 - .040) sheets of metal, possibly
steel or stainless steel. I've seen copper head
gaskets for flatheads before, but have never run
across this type of steel shim gasket on an OHV
V-8. Ought to be good for a little compression
ratio boost, but what else should I know? They
apparently can be re-used since nothing happens
to them when they are installed? Do I use some
kind of goop or something when I put the heads
back on? Should I use standard torque specs?
