Whoa there-------Nitrogen in the tyres to make the rigs lighter & minimize
tax?...thats a good one!...picture this...big rig with giant aircraft tyres
pumped up to Dolly Parton proportions just about FlOATING on the road &
company man with a tax REFUND slip in hand!---- nudge nudge ;) ;)

HOUSTON (AP) - Shell Oil Products Co. is pushing nitrogen instead of air to
keep car tires inflated longer.
The Houston-based company announced its UltraFill Tire Inflation System
recently, saying underinflated tires cost motorists millions of dollars in
wasted gasoline.
Compared to compressed air, nitrogen diffuses about 30 percent to 40
percent more slowly, Shell said.
The UltraFill System converts a car's tires to nitrogen in about 10
minutes. The tires do not have to be removed from the vehicle for the process.

Nitrogen has been used for more than 20 years to inflate tires on
commercial and military aircraft, including Air Force 1 and the space
shuttle; earthmoving and mining equipment; high-performance race cars; and
other applications where optimum tire performance is demanded.
Nitrogen-based tire inflation systems have been used in Brazil for years in
automobile tires and truck and bus fleets. Air Products is the leading

United States have underinflated tires. With the UltraFill service,
motorists are able to maintain properly inflated tires for a longer period
of time, thus extending tire life and improving fuel consumption and road
handling.
The UltraFill service also positively impacts the environment. Based on
nitrogen, a clean, moisture-free gas, it significantly reduces internal
tire oxidation and wheel corrosion. Tires that are inflated from
traditional compressed air systems are typically filled with oily, wet air,
which accelerates tire wear. An improvement of only five percent in tire
life for vehicles on the road today would result in at least 10 million
fewer tires to dispose of each year in the U.S.
In addition, drivers can get better fuel economy with properly inflated
tires, which roll more efficiently than underinflated ones, reducing fuel
consumption by up to 10 percent and decreasing vehicle emissions. Tires
filled by the UltraFill service could significantly reduce the two million
gallons of gasoline that the U.S. Department of Energy reports are lost
every day due to low tire pressure.
