Back in the early fifties a gentleman named Bill Scace brought his 300 SL gull
wing to Bonneville and I fell in love with it. What a machine, so sleek and full
of modern things. There is something about the 300 SL that will always have that
magnatism. I bugged this person every chance I could to just take it on a short
run in the warm up area. After he set records he did just that, he let me. I got
up to a speed of around 130-140 mph, wow what a thrill to drive this wonderful
piece of engineering. I know how the Turk feels when something like this comes
around that one time only. Things didn't work out so I could run it on the
course but just the same the thrill was just driving it anywhere on the salt
flats.
I think(know) the salt bug bit before that but I will never forget that day or
Mr. Scace for sharing his special 300SL racer with a kid from California. Mr
Scace thanks for the chance.
