Ray,

The first run(down run) is also the qualifing run. If the first run exceeds
the existing record you are now "qualified" for a record. The next morning
all "qualified" entrants will make another
run(return run), these two will be averaged together. If the average exceeds
the existing record that speed now becomes the new record. Following the
"return runs" qualifing will resume for that day.
