Hi Keith...me again.
I figured from your first e-mail that you had stock brakes. They are
plenty good enough if treated properly.
Marlo has stock Ford station wagon brakes on the rear of the Lakester.
He is using the same pads that we coated 5 years ago. They are plenty
good for LSR and much more economical to buy parts for then after market
brakes. 5 years ago we spent many hundreds of hours and thousands of
dollars working with Sierra Disc Brake Co, Goodyear tire, & nascar at
Bakersfield and Sagus Raceways on brakes. I've spent 35 years building
and solving brake problems for hot rods and all types of race cars -
including Indy, Formula I, Sprint, Road race and over the road 18
wheelers. I do know what I'm talking about. The ceramic pads are good,
but not for LSR cars. They are way too aggressive. To get them hot
enough to work right-you have to be on them all the time...no good for
our kind of racing.
I have been using Sierra Disc Brakes on the rear of the roadster because
they gave them to me free. 100 times more brake than I need. This year
I'm taking them off and putting on 54 Chev drum brakes because I can
tuck them inside my 5" wide rear wheels and put moon discs over them for
better aerodynamics. They will be plenty of brake once they are coated.
On the salt and the lakes you don't want to lock up the brakes because
it digs ruts in the ground. On pavement it puts flat spots the tires..I
could go on and on but I'll save it for the article I'm doing on
coatings for the ECTA News letter. Brakes will be covered in the second
article--the first article is on exhaust systems. I will be sending it
out next week.
Go to the wrecking yard, buy a pair of rotors that aren't burned with
hot spots, get kits for your calipers and send me the whole mess. You
will never have brake problems again.
