Ok.......There you all go again, missin' the point!!!!!!
Some one said it was a "Dampner." Right, that's what it
is............
On some engines (V8's) the crank is twisted and a lot of early V8's
were flat plane cranks .So some were in balance naturally. As was said,
the primary reason is to stop the crank from destroying itself due to
Inertial Torsional Vibration.
Why else would the manufacture/s use one if none were required?
All engines have secondary couple imbalance, due in part to firing
pulses as well as rotational vibration. The 'Dampner' if designed
correctly for it's application, kills the torsional twisting harmonics
that crack cranks and pound out bearings. In order for you to get ALL the
power from an engine in a power only consideration, I would use a
Dampner. Why? If the bearings are being pounded and the crank is
cracking, as we live in a Universe where nothing is for FREE, then some
of the power you are making is being used to destroy stuff.
Ergo...... it would be better to have that energy doing useful
work....no? Anyone follow my reasoning?????
In short 1/4 mile races, I suppose the mass of a Dampner is being
considered as a parasitic power user with little benefit, but I would
rather run a motor for longer than shorter when I'm paying the
bills...In any
case the car could be lightened in other areas, or, have you thought of
lighter than air gasses for the tires,
or filling the roll cage with same, to reduce some weight.?? Along with
a vacuum in the crankcase to reduce pumping losses, this must surely
balance out the extra weight of a 'Dampner'.This is kindda like the
truck carrying a 4000lbs of live birds, if the driver bangs on the side
of the truck, he can reduce the weight on his tires as he goes over the
weak bridge!!!! Thing is,I use a Dampner when I'm payin'............DK
    (S I R)
BTW, I've a question about ceramic coating later
on......DK.
