Bruce, List,
Okay, you asked, here are a few things to fuel some fires or elicit some
comments;
1. At the USFRA meeting last Thursday evening, it was announced that
907,568 tons of salt had been returned to the racing surface since pumping
started last November 1. Those are Reilly calculations based on a specific
gravity of 1.15 for the brine being pumped. That equates to a salt content
of 16-17%. This is down from the December figure of 1.18 which really had
the scientists among us pleased because that would be over 20% salt. No
answer on how hard that would be on the pumps. The specific gravity of the
brine should increase in February because Reillly has moved a Cat onto the
donor area to stir up the surface and increase the percentage of salt in
solution. What we are hoping for is all "net gain" because Reilly continues
to draw brine from the north side of the freeway for their mineral
extraction business.
Last summer we had better salt at the north end of the course than we have
had in recent memory. Lets hope this continues and the magnesium chloride
that poisons ths area at the end of the access road can be diluted enough
for stronger, longer salt crystals to form in that area.
2. By vote of the members at the meeting it was decided that for now we
will stay with the rules on bar-stool racing and not allow gasoline engined
stools. If you want to build and race at WOS, it's electric, single motor
with a twelve volt battery. Spiral cell technology like Optima would seem
to be wise in the event of an upset. That way no acid would be spilled on
the rider or most importantly, on the salt. This assumes the rider is aware
of other potential problems.
The gasoline powered stools can get into the same 40 HP power as the Jr.
Dragsters. The concern is that there could be some serious injuries at the
possible high speeds.
3. The course preparation fee will go up to $15 per entry this year.
That was announced at the SCTA awards dinner. Last year there was only a
slight shortfall in the fund due to the World of Speed cancellation but this
year we will most likely have some higher costs. Bill Ward who worked for a
very small reimbursement last year has moved and we will have to come up
with some other mechanic who may charge more. Getting someone to Wendover
for a day is not the easiest. After several seasons on the salt, bolts,
nuts, brakes, clutches, electricals, and anything with continual exposure to
the salt may never work or come loose again. It's an interesting problem
every summer.
4. Both organizations have changed entry fees for the racers. SCTA/BNI
is up, USFRA is down, with both organizations making it more expensive to
enter at the event. As has been discussed before, this is still one of the
least expensive things associated with racing.
Okay, there are several subjects to mull over, bitch about, cheer for,
complain about, support or decry.
5. If you can't find something there, write to;
Bureau of Land Management
Salt Lake Field Office
2370 South 2300 West
Salt Lake City, UT 84119.
Enclose a self addressed, stamped, #10 envelope and request a copy of the
latest BLM brochure, BLM ... UTAH, The Bonneville Salt Flats. The photo on
the inside, toward the center, headed "Testing the Salt" which graphically
shows salt thickness along with the rest of the copy in this brochure should
be enough to keep this list hopping for a week.
6. The latest regional flap over Washington DC western land fiascos is
the voted on and planned to go into effect on Feb. 14, prohibition on
wheeled vehicles on the Silver Island Backcountry Byway. Check the map on
the inside of the brochure. Someone leaked the minutes of a meeting to off
road users in the West. The vote had been taken and the decision made with
no input or public response to this closure. You could have heard the
scream in Washington ... and they are. Now they are forced to have hearings
on this latest BS.
Lets hear your input!
Wes Potter, Secretary, USFRA
