Mayf and list,
I have no idea what Tom was using for data in the 1500 hours of computer
design time he put in before building anything on their 'liner. As head of
F-16 airframe maintenance at Hill AFB I have a hunch he was working with
more than eyeball engineering. Burklands cars have never been conventional,
often pushed the rules and always fast. Gene is in the airframe repair
business and Tom learned at his "father's knee" so to speak before he went
to college ... no substitute for that hands on experience to make an
education more meaningful. Their approach is to solve one problem before
moving on to the next one to show up. With a longer course I am sure they
will be able to give that car the test it deserves, maybe give Nolan a push
on his 442+ time. They solved part of the exhaust heat problem with a HPC
coating on those 8' titanium dump tubes that is the same one HPC puts on F-1
and Indy car exhausts, it's designed to keep the heat in the tubing. Some
venting that opens at low speeds was the other part of the solution. They
have temperature sensitive dots which show heat levels and the last runs
didn't get above the first heat level. This after frying the electronics
between the engines on their first full power run.
