Donald Campbell had problems with a mysterious wheel imbalance at Lake Eyre,
Australia. It was eventually discovered to be salt buildup inside of the
wheels. This is mentioned in at least one of the books.
Craig Breedlove had exactly the same problem at the Black Rock Desert in
1997, only with the alkali dirt of the playa, rather than salt. Again,
after much time, this was discovered to be the reason for recurring wheel
vibration. In November 1997 he redesigned the width of his middle (of
three) front wheel to allow enough room to blow out the dirt between runs.
This solution is as yet unproven, as weather ended the season immediately
after the new wheel was built.
