Returned from El Mirage last night. A lot of rumors were flying around last
week about the meet being cancelled because of rain. It was flooded by
rain showers Wednesday causing the BLM to overreact and consider
cancellation of racing Sunday. Cooler heads prevailed as Mike Cook and
other board members toured the lake bed with the BLM early Friday morning.
They found 2 1/2 miles of dry lake bed and the meet was on. Everyone
should consult the SCTA web page for event information and condition
updates.
Sunday dawned with a near perfect racetrack and 10 mph tailwinds (El Mirage
horsepower). Turn out was smaller than usual caused by cancellation rumors,
short turn-around from last months meet and the upcoming Muroc meet.
Fast speed went to Pete Prentice driving Les Leggett's blown
fuel lakester to 291 mph! This is the fastest speed in the last 10 years.
It looks like Carr and Kaplan's 306 mph record is within their reach.
Many records were set throughout the day due to a good track and strong
tailwinds
