The big problem with electric transmissions would be the size and weight of the motors and generators needed for the power you'd be talking about. You might be able to do it using the latest brushless motors which have a very high power to weight ratio. The transmission losses could well be higher than a normal mechanical transmission so you might need more hp to start with. Its a system that they've started to use on big cruise and warships over the last few years where they call it Full Electric Propulsion - they use it for the same packaging reasons as you mention.
