Thanks to all that took the time and trouble to reply. Much appreciated as
ever.

The issue was a mixture of most things relevant to your varied advice.
Except, happily, not to a sagging chassis. Things in our household do sag,
but we won't go there!

The lock was almost certainly original..pretty knackered. Nothing
particular, just a bit sloppy all round. One little crack just beginning.
Trouble for the future avoided there.

The striker likewise looked pretty worn and it was a fraction
wobbly...didn't rotate but could move around a little on its axis. Replaced.

Moving the striker upwards and inwards a little did the trick although one
has to give the door a fairly brisk shut. Nothing too serious, but it's not
the nice "thunk" that one gets with, say a Mercedes! I have to admit to not
appreciating the two positions ie where the tongue of the lock locates on
the striker. Holes in ones knowledge is why one asks the List???

The PO had lost(?) the tapped plate that goes in the wheel arch and into
which the four locating bolts are screwed and replaced them with a weedy
piece of steel (biscuit tin?) and nuts with flat and spring washers. Have to
admit that this did work but it was a complete pain to deal with. The tapped
plate, which I'd been missing all these years, did simplify things. I
suppose I've got the same arrangement on the other side but will leave that
sleeping dog well alone for the while.

Problem solved.fingers crossed. Thanks again,

(My Roger Moment book arrived just as I finished putting everything back
together. The perfect answer is probably in there somewhere!)

Simon.
