Absent extraordinarily dirty conditions I doubt that the ability of any
filter, regardless of its length, to freely pass oil will be compromised
before mileage warrants a change.

If I have gone to the trouble of draining and changing oil it takes little
effort to also change the filter and since the most expensive filters cost
less than US$20.00 I think it borders on penny-pinching to not change the
filter given the costs of owning, storing, insuring and fueling of our
vehicles which are likely not our primary means of transport.

In any case if one is concerned about the internals of their oil filter (as
well as their engine) it would pay to buy an oil filter cutter and pull out
the medium for examination under sunlight. This will tell more than simply
the appearance of the oil as detergent oil goes dark after only a short
amount of time whereas finding shiny bits of metal/bearing on the paper
surface--or not--will likely tell you something useful.
