A guy named Alan Smith had a garage on South Beach full of old
Rolls-Royce's dating from Miami Beach's heydays in the 20's and 30's. He
described himself as a certified RR mechanic but I believe he was simply a
professional chauffeur who had a classy English accent. Nevertheless he
knew his stuff and as an aspiring gearhead I used to hang out there. I had
a TR3 with a radio and I remember asking Smith what he thought about
putting an inline resistor into the distributor to coil wire. He shook his
head and simply removed the wire, tied an overhand knot in it and
reinstalled it. *Voila--*the ignition noise was gone.
