So it would appear from the follow up inspections that the oil loss is coming
from the connection between the rear of the engine block and the rear back
plate. That connection has the the main block to plate gasket and the small
rectangular gasket strip along the rear bear cap. There are two cylindrical
gasket plugs that slide in the groove between the side of the rear bearing cap
and the block. That should seal the connection. It would seem like a damaged
rear bearing on the cam or crank would not be the cause of the leak for the
volume that was reported but it would place the oil outside the crankcase.
