Okay, last one, I promise. About 20 years ago I had a Toyota Celica
convertible as a daily driver. I brought it into my mechanic at the time to
have something done, I forget what. Anyway, a couple of days later he
called me to tell me he had some bad news could I stop in. So I went on
over and he proceeded to tell me how the car had an electrical fire in it
due to something one of his mechanics had done. He promised me he would get
the entire thing fixed, and in fact had sent it somewhere else to have the
wiring replaced so I couldn't see it. He told me to rent a car and he would
cover all the expenses. So this went on for quite some time. He would send
me invoices from some other place, and other paperwork. He was extremely
apologetic, and as I really like this guy I couldn't get angry.
So finally the day comes when he calls me to tells me the car is ready. So
my wife and I drive down in the rental car to pick it up but when we get
there I go in the office and he says that we'll have to go around and go in
the main garage door because something's blocking the entrance from the
office. We walk around and he opens the door, and there's my car with a
brand new paint job. Completely detailed with any and all body work
repaired. It was now silver instead of black. The look on my face was
priceless!
The bride had cooked his whole thing up with him as a gift. The car had
been in a body shop two blocks over the entire time it was gone. There was
no fire. He had fabricated all the paperwork he sent me on his computer.
I don't have the car anymore but luckily I still have the bride. For 42
years.

several times. When I retrieved it from a rental garage (four years ago aft=
er
having stored it five years) the interior had been stolen. It was in separa=
te
boxes waiting for me to finish the body. So now I have no seats, carpets, d=
oor
cards or interior trim. It was all leather and worth several grand. That to=
ok
the steam out of me finishing the car.

I'm retiring this spring so I hope to put the time (and money) into get=
it
done. Well see if this happens or if I too end up selling and enjoying a
different car. Though I could give it to a 20 something nephew has the skil=
l to
finish it. He is not yet shown interest in something like that, he's mo=
re into
mid-80s pick-up trucks. But tastes change.

Good luck with the paring down of projects. Life gets shorter and we all ha=
ve
to decide what we want to spend our time doing. Driving a Bugeye is a lot m=
ore
fun to most people than restoring a car.
