Additionally to Kees=C2=B4s coomments gear reduction starters gear in on th=
e=20
wrong side of the flywheel and usually damage the gear teeth of the=20
flywheel over time. Not recommended.
When an original Austin-Healey starter motor doesn=C2=B4t crank the engine,=
most=20
times it is bad wiring or engine earth cable. When the original starter=20
motor cranks the engine and it doesn=C2=B4t fire up, there is something wro=
ng=20
with the ignition or fuel supply.

Gear reduction starters for classic cars are usually modified items from=20
modern cars. Often the cheapest starters are chosen to modify. I often hear=
=20
stories about bad reliability. The original starters in our old bangers=20
have survived well over half a century of neglect and if going wrong are=20
imminently rebuildable. Why replacing something that is working perfectly=
=20
fine?
If you are worried about the starter take it out, dismantle, clean,=20
lubricate the bearings (but no oil on the shaft and the inertia gear, just=
=20
some graphite powder) and it will be good for another 50 years or so. In=20
very rare instances the collector may need some attention on a lathe,=20
undercutting the insulation and new brushes. Sometimes the bronze bushes=20
need replacing due to lack of maintenance, did you ever supply a drop of=20
oil to the rear bearing bush?!!
