There is no hole in the firewall provided for the tach cable. It runs behind
the engine and is clamped in the sealing strip between the firewall and the
transmission cover plate. That allows the cable to run in gentle curves without
kinking.

Without as little bends as possible, whatever the original routing. Avoid tight
bends especially.

It of course comes from the exhaust/carb side of the engine, but then does it
go straight back towards the firewall, through it and across behind the dash to
the tach? Or does it cross the engine bay behind the engine, then through the
firewall and straight back to the tach?
A photo would be perfect.
