Subject: [Healeys] Tires

Hello list. It has been awhile since I had a question for the group.

I need to replace my 12 year old Michelin ZX175R15 tires on my ?61Austin Healey
with modern tubeless wire wheels.

The only ones I can find that are close to that size are Michelin XZX 165SR15
or Vredestein 165HR15.

Opinions on these??

Recommendations for a tire shop in Southern California that knows how to mount
and balance wire wheels?

Thanks,

Ron Fine

Sometimes when I fill up the pump shuts off before I think it should. If I rock
the car side-to-side a bit I can ofter get another gallon in. I don't know if
the filler tube projects into the tank or not, but if it does, by rocking the
car it allows some air out of the tank making room for more gas. It's worth a
try.

Dented bottom of tank, may tank has collapsed a bit due to a vacuum
caused by a blocked vent/fuel cap in the past?

Roger I have the same problem. They say it was supposed to be over 14
gallons or about 54 liters. I ran mine out of gas. Put two gallons into.
Should have been able to fill it with 12 gallons - distance to the station
was less than a mile. I actually put in 8.5 gallons. I looked through the
Moss Cat. and can find no specs. on the capacity of the tank.
So I just have to plan carefully where I am going. Here in NV you can go
long distances between stations.
I wonder how many other folks have the same problem???

is used in the United Kingdom and is equal to approximately 277.42 cubic
inches. Its exact value is defined as 4.54609 *liters*. One *imperial* gallon

Verbatim per the workshop manual for a ?62 BT7:

12 Imp., 14.4 U.S. gallons (54.5 litres).

P.S. Starting with a full tank I have run out of gas after only 130 miles. I
might have had the carbs a bit too rich but I was driving Fast and Furious

I am using Vredenstein 185 X 70 on my BN7. I am running tubes in them.
Tubes were readily available at tractor/farm implement repair shops.
Rims are 72 spoke. Good wear, low noise and fairly sticky. Been on now for
about 8 years and maybe 8000 miles. They will age out before wearing out.

Regards,
Richard C

An alternative could be the Vredestein or Michelin 185/75 or 195/70R15 size
tyres.

Hello list. It has been awhile since I had a question for the group.

I need to replace my 12 year old Michelin ZX175R15 tires on my ?61Austin Healey

The only ones I can find that are close to that size are Michelin XZX 165SR15
or Vredestein 165HR15.

165-15 tires are all a little smaller in diameter compared to the original
590-15 cross ply.
Maybe consider the Mich. XAS 180-15 tires that are 3% taller and so fit better
in the wheel wells, but you do have to be careful with some clearances.
I am very happy with mine after about 4k mi

The 165s would be closer to the original size. Tires without the aspect ratio
number are usually 75s or 78s. The S denotes a tubeless tire.

I'm shopping myself and would be interested in what you discover.

Ron glad you started a tire thread - been a while. :)

I toyed for many many years (well over 20) before finally replacing the 185/15
Mich redlines. Just could not find the tall tire like I wanted without paying
large $. Finally settled on the Vred 185/15. They fill up the wheel well
like I wanted and are taller than the 165s. To me the 165s look anemic in the
opening, esp the BJ8 which sits taller anyway. Less than 400 miles on tires
but they ride and grip ok. Not a huge fan of the sidewall. Hope this helps.

Keith

1 Week away.

It's not too late to join us for SE Classic XXXI. This event is becoming a mini
Conclave with over 80 Registrations. The rural area and location are
outstanding for Healey Fall Driving.

2017 Austin Healey Southeastern Classic

The Atlanta Chapter of the Austin Healey Club of America is proud to announce
that the 2017 Southeastern Classic will return to Lake Guntersville Sate Park
in Northeast Alabama.

October 12-15, 2017. You don?t want to miss this one. It will be a great time
to spend with old and new friends experiencing wonderful fall temperatures,
brilliant colors and magnificent sunsets at the Lake Guntersville Resort Lodge
located high above the banks of the Tennessee River.

There will be a full schedule of Healey activities including lakeside Car Show,
Poker Rally, Gymkhana, Funkhana, Regalia, Valve Cover races, awards banquet and
of course some Friday night fun and laughter. If that?s not enough, there will
be free time to relax with friends, go antiquing in town, visit local
vineyards, explore hiking trails, go caving, golfing or just drive your Austin
Healey on the numerous back country roads. Many area attractions are also
nearby such as the Huntsville Space Center.

We have completed the set-up for on-line registration using this shortcut link:
 www.msreg.com/SEClassic<http://www.msreg.com/SEClassic>. We have
incorporated many features and content into the registration website to make it
informative and user friendly. A .pdf version of the registration form is
available upon request.

FYI, the telephone number for room registration at Lake Guntersville State Park
is 256-505-6621 and the group code is 5792 for our event.
