Hi Jim,
I have heard about experiences like those of your friend many many times.
I would suggest that the machinist who did your engine had previously encou=
ntered problems with bronze guides and hogged them out to provide lots of c=
learance.
As explained in my article there are penalties associated with doing that =
but excessive clearance does minimize the possibility of a catastrophic eng=
ine failure caused by the head of a valve going through a piston.
The thing is however that if it is necessary to make the clearances larger =
than those of the cast iron guides that you are replacing then why bother c=
hanging them at all.

i have had bronze guides now for about 18 years with no problem. friend ha=
d them put in his bj8 and we had to pull head=20
and take it back to machinist because of valves hanging up. still had a li=
ttle problem on one valve, but it eventually wore in. =20
appears to be a machinist problem on the ones i am familiar with.
