quick way to tell if it is 180 out on ignition timing.
After repeated attempts to start the engine put your hand on the exhaust
manifold. Is it slightly warm? If the answer is yes you are firing at BDC
not TDC.
Your comment about slight smoke from the carbs would tend to confirm that.
