The workshop manual says to lubricate the tips of the shoe support posts with "Girling (white) brake grease" as well as the operating and abutment points of the shoes themselves. The post and moving shoe are constantly rubbing metal to metal, and the contact point needs a bit of lubrication. The felt ring retains the grease, keeping it from being wiped away, same as the felt pad on a set of points. Both white brake grease and points grease are high temperature grade.
