Gentlemen,
The unification of chassis and engine number digits began about half way
through the BN1 in early August of 1954. The BN2 didn't show up 'till a year
later.
The 16XXXX numbers were discontinued in early September '54. The last non
unified number I have recorded on the Hundred Registry is noted as being off
the line 10 September 1954 and it is number 161236 with Body 5198 and it
went to Australia. So there was about a month of overlap of old series
numbers and the new numbers. The unified numbers began at 20XXXX. Though I
have dozens of early unified numbers recorded here, the first one I have
with a stated completion date is 214739 with unfortunately no Body number
recorded by the owner, but built 9 August, 1954.
This is where full and careful documentation of these facts and numbers in
the Registry really start to paint a picture, and the importance of full
number recording is essential.

Keep in mind that, at that point in production, body numbers were assigned
at Jensen, but Car numbers weren't assigned until the body was mated with
the engine, and then the car number was stamped and recorded to match the
already assigned engine number. And there's no way of telling without the
factory records the sequence or numbering of production, since the engine
numbers
were in series across several car lines, so consequently there were large
gaps in car number series.
