Carl, assuming the overdrive solenoid itself is good, anything preventing
power to the solenoid (which produces the click when it operates) can cause
your symptoms. This includes:
1. The dash switch (contacts not closing, intermittently).
2. The overdrive relay (contacts not closing, intermittently).
3. The gearshift switch (contacts not closing, intermittently).

When you do the gearshift click check, if you have a bad relay and do the
check with your foot on the accelerator pedal and again with your foot off,
you can get different results. The throttle switch that is connected to the
accelerator should bypass the relay if your foot is off the pedal.

My guess would be a bad relay. When you don't get a click, you can test the
relay by checking for 12 volts between relay terminal C2 (where the two
white/green wires are connected) and ground (ignition switch and dash switch
on). If you get 12 volts, then the problem must be a bad or
out-of-adjustment gearshift switch

This is the continuing saga of my overdrive problems.

Stopped working just before storage for the winter.
Checked electricals to find poor connection on overdrive switch
Overdrive works for about 2 miles then quits
Pull cover again and find that selenoid has shorted (may have been mice)
Replaced selenoid and works fine.
2 days later go to first car show of the season and overdrive stops working
after 3 miles.
At car show turn on key and overdrive switch and rock shift lever-no click
Drive home, park the car for 2 hours, turn on key and overdrive switch and
rock shift lever-CLICK.

Did I miss an adjustment here?

Thoughts are appreciated.
