Forgot another possibility, the vacuum advance/retard unit on the 
distributor. This can leak if the diaphragm is ruptured or it can be 
stuck in which case it will not function properly. The same goes for the 
flyweights in the distributor, they need a drop of oil once in a while 
and are often neglected and become stuck.
