Try going up a steep hill when the gas is low. Although you can suck the
fuel out with the car level, steep hills move the gas to the back of the
tank and the car will sputter. My first thought was , the nearest gas
station was 15 miles away. Once back on semi level ground, the car had
enough gas to get me there.

That's because the pickup pipe for the fuel is located in the bottom of the
tank in the drainage pan recess, meaning if you run the fuel out with the
fuel pump there will be very little if any fuel left in the tank.
