Paul,
The battery should always be connected when running the engine. If not,
you may damage the regulator/generator/alternator.
In your case it could be a short in the old battery or dirty terminals,
broken earth strap, that sort of thing, check first. If that is OK check
regulator/generator/alternator.
If the battery is kept on a trickle charger it should last about 7-10
years. If not it can be gone within a year or two if the car is not
driven regularly.
