Patrick,

The lower smaller diameter portion of the rubber boot fits snugly over the 
round metal gear lever "cup". The upper larger diameter portion of the boot 
has another lip which fits snugly into the round hole of the gearbox cover. 
Finally the carpet with its vinyl bound ring lays over all this. The carpet 
snaps should hold the carpet securely in place.

These pictures are on a BN7 but I believe the arrangement should be the 
same.
