[Healeys] carb coupling shaft

Could someone tell me how to install the carb coupling shaft after the carbs
have already been installed?? Do I have to take them off and install as one
unit or can I slide the fork on the front carb back enough to get the shaft in
place. Per usual any help will be much appreciated.
