I would suggest a few things:
If you have not already put an additive with ZDDP in your oil for the cam
and lifters
pull the plugs and spin the motor on the starter a bit until you are sure
you have oil pressure--you might also have the rocker cover off at this time
to make sure oil is circulating up to the rockers. It should ooze or seap
out of the holes on the rockers-it will take a minute to get up there. It
should not shoot out.
Set the motor up to factory spec on timing and the carbs
Put the plugs back in and start it--keeping an eye on the guages, you are
supposed to run it for 20 minutes at 2000 2500 RPM, I had the hood off and
put a big fan in front of mine to keep it cool.
You can tinker with the carbs and timing a little bit while you have it
going if needed.
If things don't seem right in any way of course abort the 20 minute run.
The 20 minutes is once again for proper cam break in which gets some splash
lube at the higher than regular idle RPM.
Nothing like that first start up for the feeling of trepidtion and hopefully
pride and relief when it all goes and sounds like it should.
