Some of the newest mig set ups combined with a hand held gun spool to
eliminate friction will allow mig to weld aluminum but it will never have the
clean appearance and fine bead on this thin metal or the cleaning ability of a
hi frequency square wave type tig set up. If you can afford it some of the
new tigs for home use are relatively cheap under 1500.00 but you will want to
make sure it is ac/hi frequency and water cooled if possible. Learning tig is
like anything just practice but in truth once you play with it you will love
it. Its like gas welding with precision control of the heat. There is
another option which some one from the group mentioned a type of gas brazing
rod especially made for dirty aluminum like our shrouds that was quite strong
and cheaper to use as you could purchase a simple mapp gas and oxygen set from
home depot and lay some rod down. Look up the archives as I cannot remember
the name anymore of the material. pat
