Phil -
This is because the distributor drive gear in the car is installed
backwards. This is a common mistake because there is only a very slight
offset and inexperienced mechanics will not know to look for the offset in
the distributor drive's gear (called a drive dog), and put it in backwards.
Look it up in your shop manual, it refers to the correct position as the
"twenty-two" position for the distributor drive gear.
