Bob, have had it happen to me to, the rubber ring actually seals pretty well
on the canister style filter, but you need to make sure the cannister slips
into its slot, you can tighten it down without the cannister seated in its
slot, which is where the gasket should be, so first make sure the gasket is
in there, and next tighten the cannister down until it is just on the lip of
the housing, then jiggle or maneuver it so that it is in its slot, it should
slide in a little (against the spring tension) now hold it in and tighten
the bolt to make sure it stays where it is supposed to be.
Certainly not as simple as a spin on, but is really not too hard once you
get the hang of it.
You can get 3000 filters still at NAPA, it will come with the gasket, part
number is on John Sims Healey 6 website, I have half a dozen or so (rubber
gasket rings) would be glad to send you one free, but maybe a
lister closer could help as well (assuming you are on one of the coasts and
not the midwest)
