Perhaps there is a crack or hole in the pickup tube allowing the pump to
suck air?

Today I actually ran out of fuel with 5.5 gallons in the tank
on a flat level stretch of highway. Coasted into a gas station, turned
the ignition back on and the car started right up.
The car has 2 fuel pumps, doesn't make a difference which I use.
Happens with either.
Anyone have an idea what's going on?
