On Sprite motors, I've seen the bullet style relief valve replaced with a
steel ball bearing, so, I wouldn't rule that out.

No, I don't think it's for oil pressure relief. The oil pressure relief
valve has a cylindrical shaped body with a chamfered end that beds into a
chamfered seat and it's backed up by a spring.
John Sims, how did you know I had an ancestor who was an officer in Butler's
Rangers? Would that make this .50 calibre?
