Mike,
You need to be sure that both legs of the 220 circuit
are tied together. There should be a mechanical
bridge (pin, plastic or spring clamp) between the
breakers, so when power is interrupted, both legs are
terminated. Otherwise you are still feeding 110 to
the circuit and depending on how the compressor is
wired, will cause problems (in addition to just not
being safe).
If the reset idea works - great, but uou should still
tie the breakers together. Most electrical supply
houses will have the tie bars loose for purchase.
Shouldn't cost but a few dollars.
