I'm still wrestling with this 5 or 10 year tire limitation. What exactly
happens to the tires and what exactly causes it? Does it apply if the tires
have been stored inside and not exposed to sunlight?

They ARE already PAST time of "demise" and quite UN-SAFE!!!
FIVE years is MAX!!!
Also, average time from actual manufacture until they hit a car is about 1.5
years!!
I would not even drive out the driveway on them!!!
