Yes Scott you can take the side cover off as soon as you take the tunnel
cover off , and disconnect the battery first. Sounds like something may
have broken away and become lodged where it shouldn't be. You may not want
to do too much forcing at this point. If the laygear gets chewed up, big
bucks my friend. Just do what you can to get the car to a place where you
can start to pull things off and drive the Jag for awhile.
Also very strange things happen to these cars when the OD is left on and one
trys to go into reverse. I had one of those cars. The trany was toast.
