I used a modern urethane enamal and skipped the clear coat. Simplifies
painting, not quite as shiny without the clearcoat, still the benefits of
modern paint.
That being said it is still sort a compromise, in my opinion even without
clearcoat it does not look like a period enamel or lacquer. But it is a
very hard durable (brake fluid doesn't eat it up) sticky paint that goes on
shiny like old fahioned enamel, but responds very well to fine grade sanding
and buffing like a lacquer.
