Jim, this is a semi-educated guess on my part, I understand what you are
saying, only thing I can think of timing does affect engine temp, which does
affect run on or dieseling.
One solution that is easy enough it is worth trying is to turn down the idle
speed, less engine momentum when you stop, less likely to run on, in this
same vein would a lightened flywheel help?. Didn't some later MGBs or maybe
Triumphs have an anti dieseling valve or something that I assume cut off
fuel and or air when the ignition is turned off? Can same be retrofitted
from the Stormberg application to SUs?
I think carbon build up can contribute as well, but I beleive Ned's motor is
recently rebuilt, so probably not that.
That being said, I have had Sprites, MGBs, a TR4A and my current Hundred,
they have all dieseled under certain conditions, I used to worry about it
try to fix, it, if easy fixes related to idle speed/mixture/timing don't
work (and mind you I would tune my car to run right not stop run on, in
other words don't do anything to stop run on that compromises how it runs
with the ignition on) in my opinion you learn to kill it with the clutch and
move on with your life, but if you don't agree go ahead and do your
darndest, and good luck.
