Mark,
The simple explanation here is that there was a change that took place in
the fastening of the bump stop boxes approx. with the introduction of the Mk
2 tricarb in late spring of '61. Prior to that point the two 1/4" NF
phillips zinc plated screws with heads exposed, with flatwashers pass
through the trim panels from the inside out to fasten with flats, locks and
nuts on the outside. When the change took place, there were welded nuts
fixed to the inside of the wheel arch and 1/4" NF hex head capscrews with
the heads exposed out in the wheel arch that ran into the captive welded
nuts inside. The interior trim then covered over the whole affair and no
fasteners were visible.
The panels will still stay in place in the car because they are held in
position with the upper metal plateau fastened along near the top of the
panel which is in turn screwed to the metal bracket on the wheel arch. In
addition the rear edge of the panel is held by the vertical bracket that
locates the rear tonneau panel. (see picture att'd) Finally the wood screws
run inboard from the door shut opening into the hardwood leading edge of the
quarter panel. The heads of these will be hidden by the alloy shut trim.
No concours here...but we may as well try to get it right. <grin>
