Hi Bill,

I'll give this a shot for you however I'm sure that someone will correct the
things I forget.

1. Turn off the battery master switch

2. Remove the safety gauge: this involves undoing the gland nut on the
cylinder head in the thermostat housing then carefully feeding the capillary
tube through the hole in the dash (usually better done with a second person
as the dash is pulled out). Then undo the brass nut on the back of the
safety gauge. Don't loose the little fiber washer.

3. Lower the steering column. May not be entirely necessary but every
little bit helps. This involves removing the cast aluminium clamp inside the
dash brace and the screws holding the grommet plates into the heater box,
both sides and loosening the steering box mounting bolts.

4. I usually remove the steering wheel as well but this is a task in
itself which, if you are not familiar with it is probably better forgotten.

5. Remove the speedo and tachometer cables.

6. Disconnect all the wires. Sometimes easier to tackle a little later
when the dash has been moved forward a little. Many of the wires going into
the back of the instruments are light sockets which can be pulled out of the
instruments.

7. Remove the top crash pad. Take out the mirror screws then there is
a metal clip at each end which must be pried back after which some judicious
maneuvering should get the crash pad loose. It may not be necessary to
remove this pad but I do.

8. Remove the center console. There are 2 screws which go into anchor
nuts in the lower flange of the center section of the dash, should be 2 more
in the sides of the console which attach it to a bracket screwed to the
tunnel and then there are 2 more at the back which must be accessed by
removing the arm rest.

9. Release the heater control cables which is usually easier to
accomplish at the units they activate than on the heater control itself.
There are 3 cables. Take this opportunity to straighten, clean and
re-lubricate these.

10. Take out the 2 chrome headed screws in the upper part of the center
section of the dash

11. Remove the 2 bolts one each side, attaching the dash mount brackets to
the sides of the car near the windshield mounts.

12. Take out the screw holding the bracket at the back of the glove box to
the heater box. (the heater box is not the black heater unit but is part of
the bulkhead).

13. The whole dash comes out as a unit; give it a wiggle and see how you
are doing.

Corrections and additions welcomed :-)

Subject: BJ8 dash replacement

Hello all,

I am having trouble getting my walnut dash out for replacement. I would

appreciate it very much if anyone would share their knowledge on this

subject.

Thanks,
