I have a period wrap laced onto my original steering wheel for that reason.

Subject: RE: Lempert Steering Wheel
I'm hinting to SWMBO that I really need a Lempert Wheel for Christmas. I'm
not worried so much about kickback or steering effort, but am looking
forward to a wheel with a large enough grip diameter to keep my hands from
cramping after a few hundred miles. I guess the Brits of that era had more
delicate digits.
