Mark -

1)  If you used a decent cam lube on the cam lobes then this will be
uneccessary.

2)  This oil leak is very unusual.  I have never seen leaks in this area.
The adaptor is pretty easy to pull off, so I would take it off and do a
thorough visual inspection.
