Mark, Disconnect the heavy cable from the starter solenoid. Connect a 12 volt lamp in its place and the other end to ground. Try pushing the button on the solenoid and see what happens. Either the solenoid is defective or some how there is an electrical loop that holds the solenoid engaged. This is an easy test.
