Well, in your case I think it is the needle that is sticking or binding on
the face plate. Try bending it slightly to get it free from the face plate.
Note that these things are VERY light and fragile so use extreme caution
when fiddling with it. The magnetic forces conducted by the electro magnets
(coils) inside the instrument are also very small so any disturbance on the
needle is immediately visible.

Thanks, that explains that.
Any thoughts on why:
The needle sometimes bounces
sometinmes when I shut the car off the needle drops to E which I believe
it should do but other times it stays where it was
Sometimes when I fill it up I have to tap the gague to get it to
register full then it seems OK
