Yes, it is possible. I bought a light assembly from JC Whitney, glued
some heavy duty magnets in the bottom of the unit, covered the magnets
with plastic goo until there was no chance of magnet metal coming in
contact with the painted surface, and then added duct tape as a safety
measure. This secures the third light to the trunk lid, but it is
easily removable without leaving any marks. The wires out the back of
the light were wrapped with electrician's tape and passed over the top
of the boot lid, and tucked back into the boot via the boot lip. In
other words the wires are vulnerable to wear each and every time the
boot is closed.

I check the wires regularly and I've replaced the electrician's tape
whenever it appears worn. The insulation on the wires never has been
knicked, and the electrician's tape (just a few wraps... not very bulky)
allows the wires to pass into the trunk without too much damage to the
rain seal. In fact, I've been in some pretty severe weather, and not
had water in the boot. The electrician's tape has required replacement
twice so far.... In 6 years!!!....

Not too shabby... no mess on the original car, and much safer feeling
when driving among "cell-phone-distracted-SUV-drivers"... not
necessarily safer in fact, but the feeling is one of being safer...:-)

Bullet connectors complete the job as y-connectors facilitate adding the
third light without disrupting the original wiring.... If I want to make
the car "original".. all I do is remove the light and reconnect the
wiring in its original configuration.
